The Hermitage makes its case for solitude without hedging: one house, one tree, one stair cut up a rock that stands alone in a flat sea, a gold halo behind it and a crescent overhead. The work carries its own notes in the margin — silence is also a form of strength; sometimes solitude builds houses you could not build together; here time is in no hurry to remind you of itself — set into the surface like annotations on a plate.

Process

Held to two values almost throughout, so the lit window and the halo behind the rock carry all the light. The marginal notes, circles and registration marks are printed into the surface rather than laid over it.
