Regalia is the most adorned of the Noble Creatures: pink, violet and deep teal plumage laid on in heavy strokes, hung with chains and set stones. The gold beak runs the whole width of the picture and holds the opulence together — without it the ornament would have nowhere to rest.

Process

Palette-knife plumage built in thick passes, then gold leaf laid into the ground behind it. The chains and settings were painted last, so the jewels sit on the feathers rather than over them.
