Heartwood is The Orb's opposite number. Where that reliquary was built out of brass to hold its stone, this one grew around it: an old bough has closed on a quartz point, put out plum blossom along the far branches, and set the whole arrangement on marble cracked and refilled with gold. The crystal is the only part of the picture that lets light through.
Process
The gold ground was laid and cracked before anything was set against it, so the disc reads as a wall that has been gilded and left, not as light behind the object.
